Burnham-UCSB
Burnham established an affiliation with the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2006, led by internationally renowned biomedical researcher Erkki Ruoslahti, M.D., Ph.D. At Burnham-UCSB, Dr. Ruoslahti leads the Vascular Mapping Center, which focuses on developing applications for vascular "zip codes" based on technology discovered in his laboratory. The hope is that the Center will use very specific delivery of therapeutics to tumor blood and lymphatic vessels to increase the efficacy of cancer therapies and decrease side effects.
In 2009, Burnham expanded its collaboration with UCSB by together establishing the Center for Nanomedicine. Directed by leading biomedical researcher Jamey D. Marth, Ph.D., this Center will promote the convergence of biomedical research with engineering, materials sciences, nanotechnology and physics. The Center will create collaborative research teams that will produce innovative technologies for an entirely new generation of biosensors, medical devices, drug delivery nanoparticles, instruments for advanced biomedical research, and other products.
These types of collaborations, involving a highly ranked university and a nonprofit, independent research institute, exemplify the inherent value of interdisciplinary research and the enhanced potential created when two such entities join forces
