Breast cancer will impact as many as 1/10 women in their lifetime. The Oshima laboratory has been investigating the role of the Ets2 nuclear regulatory molecule in mouse models of breast cancer. Decreasing the amount of Ets2 by genetic means result in mice in which breast cancers progress much slower. Surprisingly, this effect is due in part, not to the tumor, but to the normal host tissues surrounding the developing lesion.
Molecular communication between developing tumor cells and the host is an important and still poorly understood field. Determining the exact cell types and molecular mechanism of the Ets2 restriction of mammary tumors will continue to be a major focus of the laboratory. The second focus of the laboratory is the normal molecular communication between the embryo and the mother. Ets2 plays a critical role in establishing the vascular linkage of the embryo to the mother. Perhaps the role of Ets2 in development is related to its role in cancer. . |
